Poverty is part of life for much of the world's population and is reflected both in the physical environment and in the business environment. The course focuses on understanding the institutional failures that result in persistent poverty and the tools that entrepreneurs employ to both fight poverty and create profits in challenging markets. We will see entrepreneurs that invent new products and also those that develop organizational forms that expands the goals of business beyond profits. The course will also examine the impact of poverty on Indigenous peoples and how Indigenous ideas can offer solutions to key global problems.
